#welovetheNHS [Aug. 14th, 2009|05:50 pm]
I'm never one to join trends as people generally know, but something like this I find infuriating. There are benefits to the US health system, but then overall I think the NHS wins hands down. If I wake up and feel unwell, I can call the doctor at 8.30am, have an appointment by 9am and have a diagnosis/prescription by 9.15am. I think there is a view held by some in America that an NHS like system will lead to a socialist state. I'd say we are far from it. I don't really think that there is any mainstream party that appears to be socialist in our country. People have different beliefs in how their healthcare should be dealt with, but don't use it as an excuse to slag off our system.

My Grandfather has suffered from, and survived cancer 3 times in the last 20 years. Without the NHS he wouldn't be here.

My mother has had 4 sons in the last 25 years, without the NHS would she have delivered the 4 of us safely?

I broke my leg when I was 7 and had to spend 6 weeks in traction and a week to learn how to walk again, would I be able to walk properly again if my mother had to pay for my stay in hospital?

I could go on, and I know these questions aren't answerable since there isn't really any alternatives available, but all I know is that my family and I owe our lives to the NHS, and I'd fight for it until the end, when I'm lying in an NHS bed living my last moments.

I woke up stupidly early today. Its just turning 6am and I'm trying to consider whether its worthwhile getting ready for work. This is the beginning to a serious "I can't be bothered" day. Anyone care to join me?

Ah neiver kent ah didnae spaek Inglish [Jun. 28th, 2009|10:05 pm]
Randomly reading through wikipedia, then checking out some other places to try and verify it, I found out today that apparently Scots, isn't considered a dialect of English, but a language of its own closely related to English in the way that Norwegian is related to Danish. I don't completely trust wikipedia, however apparently during the 2001 census, people in Scotland were asked if they speak Scots. 30% replied Yes, whereas 17% replied Aye. Apparently the low result has been put down to Scots people believing that they just speak badly pronounced, grammatically inferior English. Scots has been classified as a traditional language (triditional langwage) by the Scottish Executive and a minority language by the European Union.

Its guid tae ken thit am bilingwal.

I sneaked out of work today and decided to take my conference call from home. I'm currently sitting on the phone with my cat pie crawling over me. I've just heard someone call out on the call "can I hear a cat purring?" Luckily there is 30 store managers on the phone they can't pinpoint its me.

Edit: This conference call won't end. I can't believe they are going on about counting tea bags! I want to die.

Star Trek [May. 27th, 2009|10:58 pm]
Just saw the new Star Trek film tonight. The film on its own was good and I enjoyed it. Just a bit gutted that they decided to rip up all the continuity and just begin all over again. It just didn't feel right. Am I just a sad old trekkie who doesn't like change?

I'm not really one for reality tv shows but for some reason I've been hooked on the Apprentice this year. Thankfully, Ben has finally been evicted! It makes me happy.

MP expenses [May. 19th, 2009|10:24 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Location |United Kingdom, Scotland]

So my MP has announced his resignation today. I remember the 2005 election and feeling slightly cheated because none of the main stream parties were on my ballot paper as by convention they don't stand against the incumbent speaker of the House of Commons. Although after consideration I suppose I would have probably voted for him anyway since he would still gave been a member of the labour party had he not been speaker. I have a great deal of respect for the man, someone who showed that you can come from a very simple background yet achieve the election to a great office and become one of the most recogniseable, and in a sense, powerful politicians in the country. He helps to fly in the face of Alex Salmond who seems to have this belief that the Scottish people are marginalised. You only have to look at the current makeup of the government to see that as a nation Scotland is listened to and looked out for. Our Prime Minister is Scottish, the Chancellor is Scottish, various other members of the cabinet are Scottish too. This helps to show that we aren't an "occupied" people and that we are in charge of our destinies as our elected representatives are in some the highest offices of state. It wasn't my intention to turn this into an anti-independance tirade, however it should be noted that for someone who can only be bothered to be a part time MP and attend Westminster for only a handful of votes since becoming First Minister, Alex Salmond knew how to claim expenses if the news papers are to be believed.

Just back from the Girls Aloud concert!

What a great night, although we did have some drunk lesbians fall on us when they were standing on their chairs, but too drunk to keep steady. Before anyone asks, we knew they were lesbians because they decided to "kiss their injuries better."

Took loads of photos so once I sift through and find the good ones, I'll try to figure out how to post some.

Day from hell [May. 5th, 2009|09:23 pm]
So it all started at 7.30 this morning......

Leave the house this morning trying to go into work early to find that the front tyres of my car had been stabbed and were completely wrecked. It turned out I wasn't the only person who had a bad start to the morning, as the whole street had been affected. The police walked down the street and took statements from everyone who was out at their cars and left it at that. To be honest there will probably be nothing done about it.

So left it at that, not a complete dampener, and headed towards the subway station to start making my way to work. My store is on the other side of Glasgow which means using a couple of forms of transport to get there. So the journey began with a short walk to the subway station. Upon arriving there I noticed a sign displaying "Outer Circle Suspended," (Those who don't know, Glasgow's subway is just one large circle with trains running either direction, around and around). This isn't really an issue since to go the long way around would only take an extra 15 to 20 minutes, but then to have to wait as four trains pass through the station as they are all too full to take on extra passengers, the day was just starting to have a little edge to it.

Eventually I made it into the city centre where I transferred to the railway station to get a train to work. Again it would be uneventful everyday except for today. Standing in Argyle St station to hear the nice little lady Scotrail have announcing the "Train to Motherwell is running approximately 10 minutes late." Again it was a case of just suck it up, things can only get better, but one thing Scotrail are well known for is keeping their passengers informed, so the recorded lady proceeded to update me every couple of minutes that the train I was waiting for was growing increasingly late. Eventually after she announced that the train would be 35 minutes late I was ready for throwing myself onto the electrical lines.

I'll leave this little story here, since as you can probably tell, my day didn't get any better at work.

Long time.... [Apr. 17th, 2009|11:54 am]
Well that is my shop finally opened so I now have the time to actually talk to people after working 18 days in a row. Booked flights for David and I to go to Tenerife in January with his parents. I've never been on a sunshine holiday before, its never really interested me, but now I'm quite excited. Still lying in bed this morning since I've not had much else to do. David is at work and finishes at 5. It will be nice to actually see him for more than the time it takes me to go to bed and shut my eyes. Anyway, thats enough random thoughts for the moment.
